Genesis

Chapter 1

The Account of Creation

1In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.

It’s like the universe is God’s canvas and, in these verses, it sounds like He is blocking in the earth. The earth was just an underpainting in verse 2.

Hebrew 8414: Tohu – without form= desolate

Hebrew 922: Wabohu—emptiness=

Jeremiah 4: 23 I looked at the earth, and it was formless and void; I looked to the heavens, and they had no light.

Hebrew 2822: Wehosek—darkness=can be used figuratively or literally

Hebrew 6440: Pene==surface, face, in front of

Hebrews 8415: Tehowm=Of the Deep, abyss, oceans, subterranean waters.

Proverbs 8: 26 before He made the land or fields, or any of the dust of the earth. 27 Iwas therewhen He establishedthe heavens, when He inscribeda circleonthe faceof the deep,

“Face of the Deep” used 2xs

Hebrew 7363: rachaph=hover, flutter, brood, move, shake

“The imagery of “hovering” evokes the gentle yet purposeful motion of a bird poised to act, stressing both tender care and latent power.”

Day 1

3 Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good. Then he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “day” and the darkness “night.”

And evening passed and morning came, marking the first day.

God spoke 10 times in Creation

God divided the day. Can’t have evening and morning without a rotating planet in orbit around the sun.

Yom—can be translated in English into over 50 different words, 24 hour day, today, time, forever, continually, age, life, season, perpetually, or a period of time.

Psa 90:4  For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night.

2Pe 3:8  But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

Act 17:31  Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

Ezekiel 4:4-6 KJV  Lie thou also upon thy left side, and lay the iniquity of the house of Israel upon it: according to the number of the days that thou shalt lie upon it thou shalt bear their iniquity.  5  For I have laid upon thee the years of their iniquity, according to the number of the days, three hundred and ninety days: so shalt thou bear the iniquity of the house of Israel.  6  And when thou hast accomplished them, lie again on thy right side, and thou shalt bear the iniquity of the house of Judah forty days: I have appointed thee each day for a year.

Day 2

6 Then God said, “Let there be a space between the waters, to separate the waters of the heavens from the waters of the earth.” 7 And that is what happened. God made this space to separate the waters of the earth from the waters of the heavens. 8 God called the space “sky.”

And evening passed and morning came, marking the second day.

God divided the waters: Waters above and waters below.

It cooled enough for vapor to let some light shine.

High carbon atmosphere. This is the creation of the atmosphere.

Day 3

9 Then God said, “Let the waters beneath the sky flow together into one place, so dry ground may appear.” And that is what happened. 10 God called the dry ground “land” and the waters “seas.” And God saw that it was good. 11 Then God said, “Let the land sprout with vegetation—every sort of seed-bearing plant, and trees that grow seed-bearing fruit. These seeds will then produce the kinds of plants and trees from which they came.” And that is what happened. 12 The land produced vegetation—all sorts of seed-bearing plants, and trees with seed-bearing fruit. Their seeds produced plants and trees of the same kind. And God saw that it was good.

13 And evening passed and morning came, marking the third day.

Need vegetation to turn carbon atmosphere into oxygen.

There is 11400, different kinds of grass.

Not all trees require pollination.

The ground appearing in one land mass (not the 7 continents we have today=pangea)

Day 4

14 Then God said, “Let lights appear in the sky to separate the day from the night. Let them be signs to mark the seasons, days, and years. 15 Let these lights in the sky shine down on the earth.” And that is what happened. 16 God made two great lights—the larger one to govern the day, and the smaller one to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set these lights in the sky to light the earth, 18 to govern the day and night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good.

19 And evening passed and morning came, marking the fourth day.

Sun, moon, and stars: Without the sun, there would be no evening and morning. Without the moon there would be no tides.

If rings of waters above broke, there would be no fossil record, because no life yet except plant life.

Day 5

20 Then God said, “Let the waters swarm with fish and other life. Let the skies be filled with birds of every kind.” 21 So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that scurries and swarms in the water, and every sort of bird—each producing offspring of the same kind. And God saw that it was good. 22Then God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply. Let the fish fill the seas, and let the birds multiply on the earth.”

23 And evening passed and morning came, marking the fifth day.

Sea Creatures and Birds

Great Sea Creatures like the Megalodon (giant squid) and Behemoth.

A Blue Whale is 100 feet long and ½ million pounds—it is bigger than a megalodon. Has the loudest sound in nature and a heart the size of a small car. A new born blue whale is 7 feet long.

The giant squid is 40 feet long.

Day 6

24 Then God said, “Let the earth produce every sort of animal, each producing offspring of the same kind—livestock, small animals that scurry along the ground, and wild animals.” And that is what happened. 25God made all sorts of wild animals, livestock, and small animals, each able to produce offspring of the same kind. And God saw that it was good.

26 Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground.”

27 So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

28 Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground.”

29 Then God said, “Look! I have given you every seed-bearing plant throughout the earth and all the fruit trees for your food. 30 And I have given every green plant as food for all the wild animals, the birds in the sky, and the small animals that scurry along the ground—everything that has life.” And that is what happened.

31 Then God looked over all he had made, and he saw that it was very good!

And evening passed and morning came, marking the sixth day.

Image and likeness of God. Angels look like men. God is described with a form like ours. He is not a formless ball of energy. Jesus is the image of God.

Man is built to work for eternity.

Everything is cumulative.

In what ways are we different than the rest of creation: We worship, desire to learn, God shares Himself with us.
